Saudade is a Portuguese word for a feeling of nostalgy and longing for someone or something that one is fond of and which has been lost. It oftens carries a fatalist tone and maybe a repressed knowledge that the one we long for might never really return.
It was also once described as "The love that remains" or "The love that stays behind" after someone is gone...

Hum não sei se concordo, a existir será sempre algo passageiro, fugaz, como a calma antes da tempestade... a saudade, a saudade é nostalgia... é o sentimento que as mães e mulheres dos nossos marinheiros sentiram quando eles embarcaram para um destino que ninguém sabia qual era, e se um dia se voltariam a ver.
